Women going through perimenopause or menopause may experience emotional or physical symptoms. While hormone levels are fluctuating, several physiological and psychological changes occur as a result. Symptoms of menopause include trouble sleeping, irregular menstruation, cramping, hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, hormonal changes, increased feelings of sadness, anxiety, or depression.

Massage therapy has been shown to improve the psychological and somatic symptoms of menopause.

How can massage help?

For many years people have been using massage as a way of relaxing the mind and body. Massage is a great way to focus on your body and become aware of any imbalances that may be occurring in the muscles. With so many changes occurring in the body during menopause and perimenopause (premenopausal stage), the body can easily become tight, sore, and achy.

Massage therapy effectively reduces the body’s stress hormones and can reduce cortisol levels to promote a parasympathetic response. It can also improve quality of sleep, build stronger immunity and health, better concentration, and reduce chronic muscle-tension.

Massage can also lower blood pressure and body temperature which may help with reducing symptoms such as hot flushes and foggy head.

Benefits of massage during menopause (before and after)

A clear benefit of a full body massage is deep relaxation and relief from some of the pains in your body. However, there are other health benefits to it as well. Research indicates that massage therapy can be effective in managing:

  • Chronic lower-back pain
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Insomnia
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • High blood pressure

It also:

  • Reduces muscle tension
  • Improves circulation
  • Increases joint mobility and flexibility
  • Improves skin tone
  • Heightens mental alertness
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system
  • Reduces fatigue

A massage may feel relaxing, but it also stimulates your nervous system, wakes up your muscles, organs, and glands, moves blood and lymph fluid and releases chemicals and hormones.

In this healing therapy, specially created to calm the symptoms of menopause, I combine aromatherapy, massage, acupressure, breathing techniques, sound, and energy healing based on your specific needs.

I always try to make a conscious effort to promote deep breathing and other relaxation techniques to help you get the most out of your massage experience.

What to expect during treatment

I will assess your symptoms and look at any discomfort you may have due to your menopause. From this I will be able to determine what type of treatment you need.

Your massage begins with essential oils to calm a busy mind, followed by a nourishing head and scalp massage to get you relaxed and let you unwind.

The massage is tailored to your body using my signature sequence of soothing, rhythmical movements to help relieve tensions, leaving you feeling recharged, rebalanced, and empowered.

I will work the head, neck, and shoulders, move on to each arm, and work my way to the legs and feet.

I use acupressure in certain points of your body (according to your needs), to activate them and let the energy flow freely through your body.

Next, you will turn around on the massage table, and I will work on the back of the legs.

I will finish with a blissful back massage.

AFTER:

You have just experienced a full Massage Therapy for Menopause! Your lymphatic system has been moved, and muscles have been worked on that may never have experienced this type of sensation. You may feel dizzy or even “an out of body sensation.” This is totally normal while your body is processing exactly what happened. When you get home, therefore, relax, and take it easy. Try to stay at home and rest on your bed or couch. Drink lots of water. Allow yourself to make a mind-body connection. Get a good night’s sleep and book your next appointment weekly, or every month.

If you have any of these conditions, talk to your healthcare provider before trying acupressure.

  • Osteoporosis
  • Recent fracture or injury
  • Cancer
  • Easy bruising
  • A bleeding disorder
  • Heart disease
  • Uncontrolled blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Use of prescription anticoagulant
  • Open wounds
  • Bruises
  • Varicose veins
  • Swollen areas
